Approach - Drawing inspiration from Hockney’s works, I designed each ashtray to reflect his distinctive pool aesthetics, ranging from the minimal primary color scheme in A Bigger Splash to a more organic form inspired by his 1988 performance at the Hollywood Roosevelt. Each piece features a teal pool base, with a yellow diving board that doubles as a resting spot for your smoking companion, emphasizing both form and function.
Objective - Create a series of hand-built ceramic ashtrays, called “Splashtrays,” inspired by David Hockney’s iconic pool paintings. The goal was to combine functional design with playful art references, creating a unique experience for users.

















Result - The “Splashtrays” brought Hockney’s art into a new, functional medium, merging playful design with everyday use. They were well-received for their creativity, humor, and practical application, offering a unique take on both smoking accessories and artistic ceramics.
